Turn a Sketch Into a Card | June Restoring Joy Sketch Challenge

Have you ever sat down at your crafting table, surrounded by beautiful paper and stamps, only to feel completely frozen? You want to create, you need that moment of peace, but the blank canvas just feels overwhelming.

I’ve been there so many times. When life feels full of transitions—whether it’s an empty nest, a shifting season, or just the weight of everyday things—our creativity can sometimes take a back seat. We want the joy of making something beautiful, but we just don’t know where to start.

That’s exactly why I started the Restoring Joy Sketch Challenge.

Sometimes, all we need is a gentle starting point. A sketch takes away the pressure of the blank page. It gives you a framework, a simple place to begin, so you can stop overthinking and just start creating with the supplies you already love.

This month, I’m using our new sketch as a creative jumping-off point to show how one simple layout can be transformed into something completely fresh.

While sketches are often used for scrapbooking, they are just as wonderful for card making! For my project this month, I took the sketch and adapted it to create a handmade Father’s Day card.

I used the beautiful Waterside Retreat Suite Collection, focusing primarily on the Relaxing Waterside Bundle. There is something so peaceful about water, isn’t there? It reminds me of those quiet moments where God meets us, stilling our hearts when the world feels loud.

One of my absolute favorite details on this card is the soft, water-effect background. To create this, I used the Water & Dotted Lines 12″ x 12″ Decorative Masks. It adds such a calming, textured feel and makes the perfect backdrop for the stamped and fussy cut fish and reeds.

When you look at a sketch, you don’t have to follow it perfectly. You can flip it, simplify it, or turn it into something completely different. The goal isn’t perfection; the goal is simply to create.
